I have been fortunate to find
broodmare farms in Illinois and Kentucky that
share many of my same beliefs in the care of horses. A good feed
program, cleanliness, exercise, a watchful eye and horse
socialization are some of the things I look for and expect when
choosing the farms that I board my horses at.
Socialization is extremely important to because I believe that
horses have a natural need to be together just as they did in the
wild long before humans realized all the benefits and uses that
horses have in their lives. All of the farms that I partner with are big
on socialization.
If
you ever get a chance to visit a broodmare farm, remember to bring
some goodies for the horses. Carrots, apples and peppermint candy
are favorites. It's a real thrill to enter a pasture with twenty or
more broodmares along with their young foals. Many will saunter over
to inspect you as you hand out your treats. At this time you begin
to realize how happy and content they are to be together.
Horses are only quarantined under certain circumstances such as: new
arrivals, injury or medical necessity, foaling and safety issues. As
soon as possible they are returned to the general population.
Circle-T Farm, Tower Farm and
Indian Hills Thoroughbred Farm provides boarding,
lay-ups, broodmare services, foaling, bloodstock advice, and sales
preparation. Their prices are very
reasonable. They also have Stallions available for breeding on their
farms.
